Why should you never buy at Reliance Digital

This is not a rant, but a story/use-case to share the power social has given us to reclaim what is rightfully ours and how brands need to be careful of their actions. If you have faced similar challenges, I would request you to share your story below. I will be sharing this blog with Brian Bade, CEO of Reliance Retail.

It all happened on 6th April 2015, a hot day in Bangalore, while watching the brilliantly orchestrated advertisement of Reliance Digital, I convinced myself to buy an air-conditioner (AC) from the store. My friend, Debarati and I, along with my wife, went to the Reliance Digital store, located in Phoenix Market City Mall in Bangalore.

The sales team did a great job to convince us to buy 2 AC units, promising free deliver and installation. They also forced us to buy addition services, although we resisted the temptation and now I am convinced it was a good decision. The sale was prompt and we left the store after spending INR 76,000 on two top range Samsung AC units.

The delivery was promptly done the next day, 7th April 2015 and the team dumped the AC unit in our (Deb and mine) houses. This is where the ordeal began.

The installation team, called me and confirmed the installation at 10 AM on 8th April 2015, but no one turned up. I called the Service Center (SC) number given to me (08067266233) and I was assured tat another engineer would come in two hours. No one turned up or even called. I kept waiting. I called the number again and was given another time slot – this time 7 PM. I had planned a dinner which I had to cancel. However no one came.

Next day, 9th April, 2015, this comic game continued but with more panache. The engineer called me and promised to be at my place at 10 AM but in vain. I tried to reach him and he did not respond to me. I called the SC team and they gave me their Team Leader, Saleem’s number, who promised that the engineer will come at 1 PM. I waited, confined in my house, not able to go anywhere, expecting engineer to come. No one came and I called Saleem, who did not respond to me. I called multiple times, but in vain. Finally he decided to pick my phone at 4 PM and gave me another engineer’s number who promised to visit by 6 PM. I waited but once again, a fake promise. I called him and he said he is on his way and will be at my place by 7 PM. He never came. I called to learn that he is 1 km away from my house and will be here in another 30 minutes. He never came and switched off his cell phone. Saleem stopped answering my calls too, although many times I got call waiting when I called.

On 10th April 2015, this game began again. No one came but I kept getting one time slot after another. This was the third day n a row that I am confined in my house, awaiting the elusive engineer to come and o the installation. The temperature, in Bangalore and in my head, kept rising, but no one cared.

After spending my whole day with them, I decided to use Twitter to reach out to Reliance Digital (@RelianceDigital), thinking, this would solve the issue for me. I was happy that the team responded to me on 11th April 2015, assuming me of an action. Manish, called me from Head Office (as I was told) and he assured me of action. But once again, nothing happened. Manish and team stopped responding to my tweets, thinking this would help them avoid me.

LessonIgnore social at your own peril. Brands may chose to ignore the customers, but the damage will continue to happen.

I sent out a note to their customer service grienvance cell at Digital.Website@ril.com who sent a note to me that action will be taken in 4 hrs. No one reached out to me. I escalated the case to cshead.reliancedigital@ril.com and got a ‘template’ response that the team will look into the matter and respond. Finally, I got another call from Deepak, who heard my tale of sorrow and empathized me with me. He promised me an action, but you know what happened. No one called me.

12th April 2015 –  One more day was over and my weekend, just like my week, was getting wasted – sitting at home and calling innumerable numbers and speaking to innumerable people had become the routine of the day. In the mean time, my tweets started getting traction and my network joined hands to help me get this sorted. 35 retweets and many likes got Reliance Digital team rattled, although the incompetent team did not revert to me. Manish called me and expressed his unhappiness and promised me again to resolve it. I knew, he and the other team members are as impotent as their process.

I reached out to Brian Bade, CEO of Reliance Digital and copied him on an email, which I marked to cshead.reliancedigital@ril.com. And then the team swung into action, seeing the backlash on Twitter and a mail being marked to their CEO. Vinitha, Manager Customer Service, finally managed to get a team to my place got the AC installed, after keeping me hanging for almost a week! The entire experience was a torture!

No one apologized to me for all this ordeal or did anything to make me come back to the brand.

Summary: In the process of all this, Reliance Digital lost me and many who felt my frustration as their customer. And this is not going to stop. All of you, who are reading this, will also learn how painful the experience if being a Reliance Digital customer has been for me. Will Samsung do anything to make amends here and ask Reliance Digital what they can do to mollify and make my experience better (and also for many more other customers)? Will Reliance Digital and Brian Bade do anything to appease this unpleasant experience. I will wait and watch.

As requested above, I would urge you to share your story(s) below. I will be sharing this blog with Brian Bade, CEO of Reliance Retail. I will keep you all posted of what action Reliance Digital takes after reading this. Or will they continue to ignore?

  1. Reliance Digital, Koramanagala store is quite bad. This was the first time I bought anything from Reliance Digital, an LG AC. Sathish, their sales guy convinced me and also appeared to be a decent person. But it didn’t take much time for him to change his perception. The very next day when the installation team was to visit I tried calling him at least 50 times but he chose not to respond to any of my phone calls. Anyways its been almost 2 weeks and the AC has not been installed yet. I had to take 3 days off from work to get it fixed but these guys don’t turn up at all. I have finally requested the outlet people to take their product back. I don’t have the patience to deal with such people who make the whole experience so tiring.

  2. This ordeal continues with Reliance Digital store. In our case it’s RO unit locked us with 5 yrs AMC worth 25k. No response for 5 days now with no drinking water. Same Engineer issue & false promise. Bade has no problems with his inefficient team.

  3. The service of the Reliance Digital of New Town Kolkata is very pathetic. If you are delivered a product from the reliance digital they are not willing to take any responsibility after sales service even after delivery of the product from the next hour. They only give false promises . The deputed some inefficient service Engineer/Demo team who has also synchronisation with the agency. Recently, a new product was purchased by me and during opening of the packing by the representative of agency deputed for demo , scratch was observed on the product which was informed to the reliance digital instantly and the same was physically seen by the fellow Demo man. After lodging the complaint with the showroom they confirmed to replace of the part within one week. After passing one week, I again called the customer care of the showroom and in return their reply was same . After passing one month, I again visited their showroom and asked about my issue. They again gave the false promise that parts will be delivered within three to four days. But the attitude of the customer care of the agency is not positive at all which compelled me to lodge a complaint to the Samsung customer care. Accordingly as per commitment of Samsung , the part of the product was delivered in time. So I appreciate the commitment of Samsung Company. If I would have waited for the show room my problem would never been solved. S0 I never prefer to buy any product from Reliance Digital in future in any case who never give customer satisfaction at all . Hence , we should prefer to purchase any branded product from the authorised dealer only.

  4. My LG TV 4k is under extended warrantee with Reliance ResQ. The TV developed display problem and I registered complaint on 21-03-2019 on phone no 18001031044 after lot of struggle as the working of the number is quite erratic. Since then I am pursuing for rectification of TV but except some hollow promises no action is being taken even after elapse of more than one month. Most of the time these people do not pick up the calls. They are highly irresponsible,unethical & unprofessional people. People are Purchasing from Reliance Digital and going for extended warranttee with Reliance ResQ considering it as Reliance brand. But their action is nothing less than a cheater as only cheater will not respond to calls after cheating.
    I am from Hyderabad. The complaints in this blog are from all corner of the country which suggest that overall Reliance Digital & Reliance ResQ are hopeless every where.

  5. Dear Khalid, You started your blog after your ordeal in 2015. But situation has not changed even now in 2019. Mr. BM Bade knows Indian system and he appears to be focusing on making money with least regards to his customers. In USA it is unimaginable to behave like this due to their system. The employees of Reliance ResQ are highly unprofessional& unethical. I have written three mail to cshead, BM Bade and finally copy to ril also. But there is no effect on them. It appears the Reliance Digital & Reliance ResQ are opened with sole intention of making money by attracting people on the name of Reliance Brand with least value to customer. Cleverly in the Reliance ResQ extended warranty agreement Jurisdiction of court has been specified as Court of Mumbai only. Even if you are resident of Kolkata and facing service related issue from RSQ, you can not go to Dist.Consumer Forum at Kolkata. They are people with perverted intelligence and are only for making money. Now little philosophical – Money earned like this will not be fruitful but will have highly negative effect in one form or the other in many fold.
    One advice- Sensitive people and people following moral ethics should not purchase and involve with Reliance Digital/Reliance ResQ else anger associated with suffering during dealing with these people will lead you in severe health problem.

  6. It’s a similar situation on my side as well. One week back I purchased an ac from the park street outlet and I must say that these people have pathetic service. It’s been a week and I’m still waiting for the ac to be installed. These people have just harassed me and my family by making us wait the entire day and not turning up. On the other hand a friend of mine purchased an ac the same day as I did from another dealer and it got installed within 2 days of the purchase.

  7. Poor installation of an inverter AC in my house. The technician installed the AC too high ignoring the recommended height which is 7-8 feet from ground. Getting hold of reliance installer was itself an ordeal with repeated phone calls and enormous amount of time wasted waiting for the installer to turn up. He did not seem to know much about safe and reliable installation and I needed to keep guiding him. A botched job. I would say keep away from Reliance Digital because of poor customer support. They will not improve their service until customers start to desert them. Be warned!

    My brother bought an AC of LG from Reliance Digital ( Logix city center mall – Sec 32 Noida ) in Jan 2019 .. this is the first summer of the AC and it stops working in May when the heat was on peak. we bought this AC for around 41000/- , this shows how good quality AC LG is producing.
    Now as AC was been purchased from Reliance at the time of issue my brother called up Reliance Digital and their highly professional team came and collect the AC for repair . After a few days they came back with dismental AC and said that this product will be repaired by LG team only .
    Now LG team came and said that as its already been dismental by someone we will take a full charge to repair this AC and no warranty will be applicable to the product.
    Hope you able to understand the issue and position of my brother that he has been cheated by both the companies.
    Now please explain who and when this issue will be resolved…. in winters ??? when AC will not be needed or should we throw this 1.5 ton LG product to garbage.
    Reliance Digital is selling LG product / getting profit / doing it dismental .. now how come the customer is responsible for this mess between you two parties.
    From last 2 months we are suffering now Consumer court and social media are now only 2 options we are left with.

  9. I was a regular customer of Reliance Digital. However after my worst experience with Reliance ResQ(My complaint No 8025106250 dtd 21-03-2019) associated with Reliance Digital, I have lost confidence on them and stopped buying things from them. Experience of other customers as described by them in this blog has further alienated me from this brand. Yesterday i.e on 30-06-2019, I went for buying 700 Lit Refrigerator and even visited Reliance Digital but finally purchased it from Bajaj Electronics, ECIL X road Hyderabad.

  12. I had registered a complaint about the refrigerator defect on 09th Sept 19 which comes under extended warranty. They confirmed me that the technician will visit within 72 hours. I waited 72 hours nobody visit to check. I call back the next day they said we have escalated the case he will visit the next day. They already had missed for first visit TAT, since then I am daily following up for the same. Every time team is saying we have escalated your case to higher management, you will get the call within the next two hour, but nobody bothers to call. Its been frustration to followup with reliance with rescue team. Even now I visited to Reliance Digital showroom. Same reply I am getting from there also. Never take a warranty from Reliance Digital. It’s a harassment.

  13. My latest mail to them, it describes my story:-

    Hi Team,

    This is to inform you that i bought Samsung SAC 1.5T 3SINV AR18MV3HETQTLY in 2017 with extended warranty from Resq. Recently i felt that AC is not cooling properly i raised a service request on 06/09/2019 and i got a SMS that the technician will attend this on 08/09/2019. Interestingly No technician called me and visited my place and this ticket was closed on 07/09/2019. Without attending or calling ticket got closed- what a Joke- Is it the service provided by Resq. Anyways i called customer care again and got the ticket reopened on 08/09/2019.
    An untrained, unprofessional and stupid technician came (I think his name was Rihan with phone number – 8650692376) on 09/09/2019 and started cleaning the AC while it was running. His hand was stuck in the blower and blower was broken. He started begging that please don’t complain, I will be fired. He said that the Ac is in AMC so he will make sure that blower part will be replaced. He called his team and marked this ticket as Pending.
    After 2 days he started avoiding my calls when i was trying to get the update on it. I called Customer care team multiple times and they ensured me that service centre people will call me back and they will provide me updated status. But interestingly from 06th to 19th today they have neither called me back nor given me any status update and i am still suffering.

    I would like to know and understand few things:-

    1) Is it the kind of service provided by the Relaince Resq?
    2) With this kind of experience what you expect that customer will further but/renew any kind of AMC of any product from resq?
    3) With this kind of experience what you expect what kind of word of mouth will be spread by the customer in the market?
    4) In these kind of situations – What is the action on the technician?
    5) If Service centre is not fulfilling its duties and not calling the customer, what action will be taken on it?
    6) Customer is suffering since last 14 days while only AC cleaning was the issue- who will compensate this suffering of customer?
    7) What customer should suffer even after paying/buying the AMC?
    8) Why Escalation matrix is not provided to the customer- customer is not aware what to do in these situations, he is calling customer care and customer care is forwarding to service centre and the Result is ZERO.
    9) Why customer should not move to consumer forum for this kind of harassment and should ask for huge compensation since complete family is suffering due to this issue.

    you can check them as the calls are recorded in this customer care center for quality & training purposes.)

    Today it’s 18th of this every month, I called Reliance Digital customer care executive & she told me that the coil is not available, it is intended . Then i called the Reliance Digital Lucknow service center, Mr. Sanjay attended me & informed me that he intended for outdoor unit coil but he had received the indoor unit coil & he has dropped a mail again for an outdoor unit coil and I have to wait for a week more to get this issue resolved. When i called the DAIKIN INDIA LUCKNOW CENTER – Mr. Mahesh Patil told me that all the parts are available with them for my Ac model, but as I being a RELIANCE DIGITAL customer I hold the warranty that is under the administration of Reliance Digital and they can’t help me out until and unless Reliance Digital request them to do so.

    I feel betrayed and disappointed being a Reliance Digital customer, you people have made a joke of customer care and in future i would discourage my near and dear to make any kind of purchases from Reliance Digital .

    I request you to instruct the concern person to fix my AC within 2 days and in future if I am treated in this same irresponsibly ignorant manner from your executives, i would be compelled to expose your ill services on different public platforms and use other means that are available with me .

  15. I bought a LG TV from Reliance Digital, i had similar experience with them. I had called many calls to the showroom and talk to manager, finally installation person came after i mentioned that i would return the TV if it is not done today. I think Reliance Digital must take care of all these otherwise they might be losing customers.

  16. I have same experience with me. Reliance is really bad. i am just going through very bad experience with Reliance Digital. Really worst handling customers. Guys please beware if you made prepayment at Reliance Store then it non refundable. So even if you don’t like product or thought of cancelling then you can’t.

    I made payment for 4k TV and and because of some emergency situations i was trying to cancel it. (it was just 2hr of gap between payment and cancellation )Reliance team is saying we can not refund you amount because we don’t have cancellation policy.

  18. Same happened with me , i bought straightener from reliance digital , that i didn’t like but they forced me and convinced to me to buy rather what i came to buy, even there staff told if you don’t get satisfied in 7 day then you can exchange and take what you originally want.
    And now they are not ready to exchange saying its against our policy , we cant exchange .
    I feel like going abd throwing it on there face .

  19. May 2020 and I see nothing has changed!!
    Reliance Digital delivered a wrong model (of an AC that I ordered online) and since then no response to my messages, calls, and no update on delivery and installation of the correct item. I had just sent an email to Head of Customer Support and got an automated reply asking for 10 hours to respond. We will see what comes out of this.
    I did not expect to be cheated by Reliance Digital and was really expecting better service, being the ‘Reliance’ brand. What a shame!

  20. I have buyed Dell 3493 model for 60999rs from reliance digital online store in lockdown period, and they have shipped my laptop through Ecom express couriers.
    But when the courier delivery reached my doorstep have found that the sides of box had void and torn stickers. Even the reliance digital tape also have came out. Therefore by looking on box i have rejected that courier on the spot. So have to ask reliance digital what does the customers gets by so much wasting time by desperately waiting for laptop and ultimately he gets this rubbish by reliance digital’s ecom express courier.
    And what is the value of goods which is being handled so badly?

  21. Just bought an LG refrigerator from reliance digital online store because i was avoiding going to the store (social distancing). The package came in a pathetic condition therefore i refused it. Have been calling customer support since then and have sent multiple emails. Even sent emails to cs head and ceo bade Brian. Not even a single acknowledgment till now. Got scammed relying on reliance !!

  22. this is Indumathy booked OPPO A5S with order number -RDF030109905 on June 14th ,2020, as the expected delivery is within 7-8 days as per the customer care information, we could not able track our product, except the order confirmed, nothing is in progress. We are really hopeless , not getting any callback from the team , as they are telling us that we will call back.
    We can understand the COVID-19 situation, as a customer , I have the right at least to track my order , so that we cannot be anxious.

  24. Hi, my experience not much different than you. I had placed an order for Samsung Smartphone M21 on August 14, 2020 on reliance digital app with an expected delivery by August 17th 2020. Since then, I have not received any status update of my order and despatch details. Till today I have been contacting customer care almost daily and escalated the issue the highest level i.e. CEO’s desk but only thins i have received is assurance that I will hear from them but unfortunately no email, call revert from these guys.

    Having such painful experience with Reliancedigital, I would not recommend any one to waste hie/her time and money buy purchasing any stuff from them irrespective of how attractive are the offers.

    I had purchsed a LG Front Load Washing Machine- LG FHT1006ZNW from Reliance Digital – Borivali (West) outlet last week. Installation was done within 2 days …. Their idea of installation & demo is pulling the machine out of the box & placing it on the floor. That’s all … Have been following up continuously with them post that. Been a week now … to no avail … And, I purchased an extended warranty with them!

    Frankly, online shopping portals like Amazon are better, at least one has low service expectations to begin with!

  26. Hi…… This is my ordeal.
    1.) On 13th Aug 2020, I ordered an external hard drive through Reliance Digital. The order was assigned to their Ulhasnagar store and to my surprise, the delivery was done in a couple of hours. (I had bought this as a gift for my brother on his birthday). Without checking I gave it to my brother and had to face the most embarrassing situation of my life. The hard disk box was completely soiled and anyone could easily make out that the box was opened hundreds of times. The horrifying part is that the manufacture date on the box was Jan’ 2014. Further, when we checked in the box, there was no data cable in it. I immediately called the store number mentioned on the invoice and complained about the same only to be ridiculed by the staff saying “Jo date hai box pe wohi rahega…hum log kya khud banate hai kya?” & “data cable aap ne hi gumaya rahega”. This was totally disgusting.
    Since that day till today I have called the customer care multiple times & written mails to all their mail id’s. However no one has bothered to revert on the same. The hard disk is lying with us & we will probably never use it.
    The customer care is pathetic & the Reliance Digital officials are as thick skinned as one can be.

    2.) Coincidentally my cousin ordered a laptop from Reliance Digital on 23rd Aug’ 2020 as it was showing delivery date as 25th Aug’ 20. He had his flight scheduled for today (28th Aug’ 2020) and his old laptop had started giving problems. Unfortunately he did not discuss with me before placing the order.
    On 25th Aug’ 20 he did not get any call for delivery upon which he called the customer care only to be informed that “25th does not mean that the order will be delivered on 25th, you should wait for a day or two”. Since then both of us have been continuously calling the customer care and getting the most bizarre responses. ON the delivery tracking site the status of the package is “in transit” since 25th Aug.
    Nobody knows where the consignment is and when it will be delivered. The last 02 customer care morons said we need to wait for a couple of weeks and this will be sorted. Honestly I do not have words to describe my anguish.
    We requested for cancelling the order to which the response is, it cannot be cancelled. One of the idiots even said that if you go ahead & cancel it, your money will be gone. You won’t get anything.
    My cousin has already left for UAE today and now there is no use of that laptop (infact there is no one to accept the delivery at his place now)

    It’s worse than how you feel when you get mugged. This is corporate mafia.

    Not sure how I can get this resolved.

  27. Reliance Digital has gotten on my nerves! It has been 35 days and they are not giving me any information on the returned laptop (which was an extra order) nor refunding the money. All the continuous calls and e-mails are only met with a template-based answer asking me to wait. They really don’t seem interested in refunding the money, so now I am on my way to take help of a consumer court!

  28. Horrible experience for an online retail portal. I bought a Samsung headphone which was not upto the standard and hence requested a return almost immediately. But ever since I have been given the runaround and on top I have been asked to go to their outlet for reevaluating the product. This defeats the idea of me shopping online- ease of shopping n returns. They dont respond quickly enough on their mails and do so only after repeated reminders. A sad commentary on a company with international aspirations n reach. Never again will I buy from this portal as besides Amazon (top choice) even mantra returns are easy. Its almost as if they want to harass into giving up the idea of returning the product. Sad unprofessional attitude.

Thanks bro.. this one really helped, I was about to purchase a phone (which costs me arround 47000) from reliance digital online store as it was running on a discounted price + 6 months resQ extended warranty (which really impressed me).. I almost purchased the phone but for my luck the payment gateway was not allowing me to pick NO COST EMI plans (I even mailed to reliance cs mentioning the issue, no response).. later I just started searching on ‘how safe is reliance digital online store’ and guess what I found lots of negative comments / feedbacks (funniest thing is I couldn’t even find a single positive feedback, good job reliance)..

  32. I am going through an extremely painful experience concerning the Reliance Digital store in Ambience Gurgaon.
    On 07.02.2021, I purchased an Iphone 11 worth ₹58528 from the store in Ambience Gurgaon. After 5 days of using it, I received a video call and realised that my voice is not going through. Everything was fine when I am communicating through a normal call. But when the call went on the speakerphone, the mic was not working and my voice was not going through. In the 4 days that I used it, I did not have to use the speakerphone so this problem went undetected.

    On 15.02.2021, I went back to the store stating this problem and to get the device replaced as the problem was from the time of unboxing, it was only detected 4 days later. The employees at the store refused to replace the phone immediately but assured me that if I take it to the apple service center and the diagnosis reveals any hardware problem, the device will be replaced.

    I went to the Reliance resQ authorised service provider where the phone was diagnosed which revealed that there is some hardware problem with the mic. I collected the report and took it back to the store. I was then introduced to the manager, who refused to acknowledge the report. He tells me that he has no authority to replace the phone. He tells me that, and I quote, “if I could replace your phone, I would have replaced all the phones that I put on display” Those phones are on display for months! I had purchased this phone just days back!

    He tells me that “apple” has a policy that we can only replace the phone if the customer brings the Iphone back within 48 hours. He goes on to show me the policy which actually said that the seller has to report to the manufacturer about a faulty device within 48hours of the customer bringing it to the store. I pointed this out to him and he still refused to offer any help. The manager is unaware of the policies himself and is trying to misguide the customers as well! He told me I have no authority to help you and that you must go to the apple service center.

    We then went to another service center who told us that since the device is on limited warranty, there is not much that they can do here and that the device will be sent to Bangalore for further inquiry. As a last resort, I had to submit the phone. I am attaching the job sheet here.

    On 20.02.2021, I got a call that the service center in Bangalore has diagnosed that the phone has “internal damage” and “unauthorised modifications” because of which the phone is out of warranty and unrepairable. They say that the phone will be replaced and that I will have to pay the amount of a new phone again!

    There is no liquid damage on the phone and there is no external damage on the phone! I was sold a damaged phone by the store and now the store is refusing to help me out as well!

    Since then, I have been in multiple conversations with the senior members from the apple service center, they have issued me a Case ID, which even you can refer to. They informed me that since the damage was from before unboxing, the seller is liable to replace the product and then the seller can stay in touch with the manufacturer for further proceedings from the backend.

    I have still not received a replacement!

Thanks … for this post….i dont buy things online … but lockdown in Delhi … forced me to buy few things online… i thought of buying samsung t50 speaker ..from reliance digital.. as they were only people who were delivering in my location and at low price.. … but thanks to ur blog…. i am not buying it now….
